Ramsey National Week, which is now in its tenth year, is currently being held.

A number of events this year have a jubilee theme.

A photographic exhibition featuring past royal visits to Ramsey will be staged in Ramsey Town Hall until July 14.

There will be a Model Boat Pageant on the lake in Milntown by Manx Model Boat Club from 1.30pm on the jubilee bank holiday – Friday, July 6.

Friends of Auldyn School will be serving Jubilee Teas at Ramsey Hall between 10am and noon on Saturday, July 7.

Also on Saturday, July 7, there will be a diamond jubilee garden party at the Grove Museum between 5pm and 8pm with music and games. Everyone attending should bring a picnic.

Friday will also see a walking carnival starting at 7pm from the new swimming pool. The now famous Ramsey Rocks! Street Party will be staged between 7pm and 11pm with two music stages, a big busk, bouncy castles, food stalls and will end with a firework display at 11pm.

This year will see three walks – a town walk will left Ramsey Tram Station this morning (Monday), the Hike ‘N’ Hotdogs walk will leave the Albert Road car park at 7pm tonight (Monday) and Joy Brew will lead a walk and ride leaving Ramsey Bus Station at 11am on Tuesday.

Ramsey Heritage Foundation will be staging ‘100 Years of Manx Fairy Tales’ at the Ramsey Methodist Centre at 7.30pm on Wednesday. Admission is £5 including a Manx Tay.

Golf Monthly sums up its hidden gems list as ‘the types of course which leave the golfer with a smile on their face for a number of reasons be it ambience, presentation, strong design, stand-out holes, sheer variety, quirkiness, or simply for being different.’
The list is compiled as comprehensively and democratically as possible, with input from county and regional golf unions, senior panelists from the magazine, and a growing number of keen and frequent golfers who contribute to a forum website.
Ramsey Town Commissioners’ chairman Captain Nigel Malpass said: ‘Ramsey is fortunate to have such an exceptional golf course in the heart of town and I am delighted that Ramsey Golf Club should have been recognised in such a respected publication. Following so soon after such a positive review from the Daily Mirror this is yet a further demonstration of Ramsey’s unique appeal to a wide and varied audience.’

Diverse Ramsey Bay is marine nature reserve

 

RAMSEY Bay has been designated as the Isle of Man’s first Marine Nature Reserve.

The reserve will protect marine life, safeguard local fisheries and provide opportunities for Ramsey to develop as a centre for marine tourism, research and education.

DEFA Minister John Shimmin said: ‘The reserve will provide a replenishment area for our important local fisheries and it will maintain and restore essential marine habitats.’

Chief executive of the Manx Fish Producers’ Organisation Tom Bryan-Brown said: ‘The fishing industry has been involved in the Ramsey Bay MNR from its inception.

‘This particular MNR differs from the other closed areas around the island in that they have been created primarily for fisheries management purposes whereas Ramsey Bay has been created for environmental reasons.

‘However, we hope that there will be associated fisheries benefits from this MNR in Ramsey Bay and that the environmental credentials of the Island will be maximised.’

The Ramsey Bay designation is the result of a three year process, working with the public, to choose the best site to protect. Ramsey Bay provides a combination of important marine habitats and potential for benefiting local fisheries.

In August scientists from the fisheries directorate of DEFA carried out comprehensive surveys of Ramsey Bay using special seabed mapping equipment and a camera on an underwater sledge.

Tony Glen, Seasearch Isle of Man co-ordinator who led the team of volunteer divers, said: ‘This is not the end of the exercise, and we look forward to further dives to monitor the state of the seabed in the years to come.’

The surveys revealed a diverse and complex underwater landscape volunteered to participate in survey dives of the bay and photographed the lush eelgrass meadows and bright pink maerl beds.

Mr Shimmin highlighted that this kind of marine vegetation should be cultured for the environmental benefits: ‘It will help us contribute to reducing impacts of climate change by increasing the carbon storage capacity of our seas.

‘Eelgrass meadows, kelp forests and reef habitats all store carbon in the same way as rainforests, contributing to lowering carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere.’

The wider benefits of the Marine Nature Reserve have also been recognised by Isle of Man Friends of the Earth. Isle of Man Friends of the Earth co-ordinator Phil Corlett said: ‘It’s really heartening to see the Ramsey Marine Reserve set up in the island’s territorial waters as it shows the Isle of Man is taking steps to protect biodiversity and helping at the same time to conserve vital habitats.

‘As a diver myself involved in the Seasearch surveys around the island, I look forward to revisiting the area next year to survey it and document any changes.’

Art exhibition races into Ramsey

Two Ramsey Manxmen celebrated for their skills in two very different disciplines – motorcycle racing and art – took centre stage at Ramsey town hall on Friday August 19 when TT competitor Connor Cummins, currently the fast Manx rider around the TT course, opened Racing Through Time, an exhibition of paintings by artist Michael Starkey.

The exhibition comes after Michael Starkey’s year-long artist’s residency funded by the Isle of Man Arts Council and commemorates the centenary of the TT mountain course in a series of 20 paintings depicting various points on the circuit throughout the decades.

Opening the exhibition Connor Cummins said how the paintings provided very different perspectives of the course from those he saw when competing, while Michael Starkey spoke of the hours of research needed to ensure historical accuracy which, in his painting of a scene of Ramsey’s Parliament Square during the 1957 TT, included showing the town hall clock reading 11.40am, the moment when rider Bob McIntyre was due to arrive on his second lap of the Senior race on the first ever 100mph lap.

Now part of the Isle of Man Arts Council’s contemporary art loan collection, Racing Through Time will remain on display in Ramsey town hall until September 16.

Residents Get Back To Their Roots with Ramsey in Bloom

This year’s Ramsey in Bloom yet again revealed outstanding horticultural talent. At the prize giving held in Ramsey town hall on Tuesday August 9 Ramsey Town Commissioners’ chairman Captain Nigel Malpass congratulated entrants on their achievements and spoke of the ‘stunning’ displays in all categories, adding that he was pleased the competition continued to attract new participants every year.
Judging took place in July by the Commission’s head gardener Ken Barnes and well-known local horticulturalist Pat Goodway who said it had been a ‘privilege’ to have visited so many beautiful gardens and witnessed such high standards. Mrs Goodway welcomed the eight newcomers to the competition this year and said that among the new themes to have emerged was a creative planting mix of vegetables and flowers providing a dual-purpose garden. An estate garden beyond the scope of the large garden category earned owners Mr and Mrs John Crellin a special commendation certificate and a comment from Mrs Goodway that the judges would welcome more estate entries in the future.
The prize presentation also provided an opportunity to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of head gardener Ken Barnes who is to retire in November after more than 10 years with the Commission.

New Ramsey Tram Service for Sunset Dinners

Additional train and bus services have been launched to enable anyone from the north and west of the Island to enjoy the popular Sunset Dinners at the Snaefell Summit Hotel.
Hon David Cretney MHK, Minister for Community, Culture and Leisure said: ‘Following the refurbishment of the Summit Hotel, the extra Friday night tram service will help cope with the increasing popularity of our Sunset Dinners. With 85 diners attending the last dinner in July, the welcome addition of the tram service from Ramsey will help provide more convenient travel and greater availability to those in the North of the Island.’
Sunset Dinner trams are now departing Ramsey at 5.40pm, arriving at the Summit at 7pm. The return journey departs at 8.50pm and arrives back at Ramsey 10.10pm. Evening trams from Ramsey will continue weekly until 2 September.
Connecting buses serving Jurby, Kirk Michael and Peel are also available using service number 5, enabling travel on public transport from all areas for the round trip. The bus departs Peel at 4:49pm to reach Ramsey at 5:29pm with the return bus departing Ramsey at 10.40pm.
An additional tram is also now operating for anyone who wishes to depart from Douglas for the Sunset Dinners. There is a later 6.40pm service as well as the 5.40pm service, with returns departing at 8.50pm and 9.50pm, also until 2 September.
Friday Sunset Dinners cost £34 including tram travel. Call 673623 for bookings.
Other evening opportunities on the electric railway include the return of Friday night trams between Douglas and Ramsey until 2 September. It is the first time for five years the service has been operating. Evening trams depart from Douglas for Ramsey at 5.40pm and 8.55pm and from Ramsey at 5.40pm and 8.40pm.

Official opening of Snaefell Summit Restaurant

A VICTORIAN extravaganza is to be staged over the first weekend in July to celebrate the official opening of the Snaefell Summit Restaurant.

The Department of Community, Culture and Leisure invested £230,000 in a complete refurbishment of the building. Despite hold-ups caused by the poor weather, towards the end of last year, improvements started on December 29, they included re-roofing the building, fitting new windows and doors, re-decorating and installing new toilets, washroom and a new commercial kitchen.

The restaurant has also been fully installed with installation of underfloor heating, that is run on air source heat pump.

David Cretney MHK, Minister for Community, Culture and Leisure, will depart on the 11.15am tram from Laxey Station on Saturday, July 2, he will be accompanied by ‘Queen Victoria’and her private secretary, to perform the official re-opening of the Summit Restaurant as part of the Victorian festivities.

The Minister, said: ‘The Summit building has been given a new lease of life, bringing it up to modern standards that will ensure its place as a prime tourist attraction for many years to come. It makes a wonderful venue for the special Sunset Dinners and Pie in the Sky evenings staged by the Heritage Railways, as well as providing cafe meals and Sunday lunches.’

The department is also half way through a £3million track replacement scheme on the five mile long Snaefell Mountain Railway.

‘My Department has also invested £1.5million in track replacement on the Snaefell Mountain Railway demonstrating our commitment to its future,’ Mr Cretney said. ‘I will be seeking approval at the July sitting of Tynwald for additional funding and hope to secure a further £1.5million to complete the track renewal next winter.’

Laxey Station will be the focal point of the event, with red coat soldiers on parade red coat soldiers, a Victorian photographer, Punch and Judy shows and balloon modelling (from 1.30pm to 2pm) and displays of vintage vehicles.

Other attractions will include the travelling museum of curiosities and wonderment.

On Saturday and Sunday, July 2 and 3, at 3.15pm a Victorian costume competition will be held for children and adults.

Anyone dressed in Victorian costume will be given half price travel on the trams.

The event extends to Ramsey with a vintage double decker bus providing shuttle runs between Ramsey tram station and the Grove, Milntown House and the Transport Museum at Jurby.

Onward bus travel is free with a valid tram ticket.

Farmers' Market returns to Albert Road, Ramsey IOM

THE Ramsey Farmers' Market will be returning to its original location of Albert Road School from Saturday.

The market had been moved while demolition work to the school took place.

From Saturday the market will be located to the rear of the site which now provides 45 free all-day parking spaces.

The Farmers' Market will take place between 10am and 1pm every Saturday.
