What's the difference between Hop-tu-Naa and Halloween?

Carving Turnips @ Cherrywood.im Turnip carving is a Hop-tu-Naa tradition on the Isle of Man

As the rest of the British Isles prepares to celebrate Halloween on 31 October, many Isle of Man residents will instead celebrate Hop-tu-Naa.

Historically Hop-tu-Naa has been considered to be the Celtic New Year, marking the end of the summer and the beginning of winter.

It was traditionally a time when people would celebrate the safe gathering of the harvest and was a sign that all preparations had been made for the long, cold winter ahead.

While 31 October may be known to many as Halloween, any Manx person worth their salt will give a stern look and say the festival in question is Hop-tu-Naa.

Cherrywood Four Star Bed & Breakfast in Ramsey Isle of Man proudly brings you news of enjoyable events taking place on the wonderful Isle of Man. Why not browse our site to find out more.

No connection

This custom of singing around the houses goes back into history, although the turnip lanterns, now irrevocably linked with the practice, only seem to appear about 100 years ago.

Pumpkins @ Cherrywood.im Pumpkins are more traditionally linked with Halloween

With the passing of time and mixing of cultures as "incomers" to the island bring their own customs, things do become rather confused and today many see Halloween and Hop-tu-Naa as one and the same.

In reality there is no connection. Hop-tu-Naa is really a celebration of "Oie Houney", the original New Year's Eve.

As such it is a sole reminder of these ancient times and the words Hop-tu-Naa are a corruption of Shogh ta'n Oie, meaning "this is the night".

However, the Celtic New Year was moved to the secular new year on 1 January, a move still remembered in Scotland where "Hogmanay", from the same root words, is still celebrated.

The Celtic year was divided into quarters and Sauin, or new year, was celebrated in Mee Houney, the Manx for November.

Ginnie the Witch

The fact remains, like it or not, that the two festivals are very much linked for many young practitioners.

How many Hop-Tu-Naaers know the words to the traditional Manx Gaelic song?

The answer is very few - although it is to be hoped a recent resurgence of interest in Manx Gaelic and the formation of a Manx speaking play group and primary school may help rectify this situation.

Today the chances are you will be treated to a rendition, or more likely part-rendition, of Ginnie the Witch, a song which seemingly adds to the confusion between Hop-tu-Naa and Halloween despite having been around for a good number of decades.

If you are less lucky, you may be assailed with another presumably none Manx variant, The Witches of Halloween, but few will be serenaded with the original Manx Song Shoh Shenn Oie Houiney, Hop-tu-Naa, T'an Eayst Soilshean, Trol-la-laa or This is old Hollandtide Night/The Moon Shines Bright.

Turnip lanterns @ Cherrywood.im Children with their turnip lanterns at Cregneash in 2009

And what of the lanterns? A proper Hop-tu-Naaer will have a hollowed out turnip the size of a man's head, with flickering eyes and jagged mouth illuminated from within by a candle.

Burning turnip

A good turnip lantern is worth a pound of anyone's money, safe in the knowledge that someone, though probably not the little cherub on your doorstep, has suffered sprained wrists and blistered thumbs scooping it out.

Tragically there is now a much-preferred soft option, the pumpkin.

True, they make very nice lanterns but they are really not in the same league. Cut the top off, turn it upside down and the insides practically fall out.

This American import goes hand-in-turnip with that other transatlantic custom, Trick or Treat, in which a devil mask and bin liner are all that are needed to do the rounds, with the threat of a trashed flowerbed if the homeowner is not forthcoming with a treat.

Three customs muddled into one night - it can only be the Isle of Man.

Hop-tu-Naa, it seems, has a confused present and an uncertain future, but it is to be hoped it does survive; a generation of children deprived of the smell of burning turnip would be a poorer one indeed.

Diverse Ramsey Bay is marine nature reserve

Ramsey Bay marine nature reserve @ Cherrywood.im

RAMSEY Bay has been designated as the Isle of Man’s first Marine Nature Reserve.

The reserve will protect marine life, safeguard local fisheries and provide opportunities for Ramsey to develop as a centre for marine tourism, research and education.

DEFA Minister John Shimmin said: ‘The reserve will provide a replenishment area for our important local fisheries and it will maintain and restore essential marine habitats.’

Cherrywood Four Star Bed & Breakfast in Ramsey Isle of Man proudly brings you news of enjoyable events taking place on the wonderful Isle of Man. Why not browse our site to find out more.

Chief executive of the Manx Fish Producers’ Organisation Tom Bryan-Brown said: ‘The fishing industry has been involved in the Ramsey Bay MNR from its inception.

‘This particular MNR differs from the other closed areas around the island in that they have been created primarily for fisheries management purposes whereas Ramsey Bay has been created for environmental reasons.

Ramsey Bay marine nature reserve @ Cherrywood.im

‘However, we hope that there will be associated fisheries benefits from this MNR in Ramsey Bay and that the environmental credentials of the Island will be maximised.’

The Ramsey Bay designation is the result of a three year process, working with the public, to choose the best site to protect. Ramsey Bay provides a combination of important marine habitats and potential for benefiting local fisheries.

In August scientists from the fisheries directorate of DEFA carried out comprehensive surveys of Ramsey Bay using special seabed mapping equipment and a camera on an underwater sledge.

Tony Glen, Seasearch Isle of Man co-ordinator who led the team of volunteer divers, said: ‘This is not the end of the exercise, and we look forward to further dives to monitor the state of the seabed in the years to come.’

The surveys revealed a diverse and complex underwater landscape volunteered to participate in survey dives of the bay and photographed the lush eelgrass meadows and bright pink maerl beds.

Mr Shimmin highlighted that this kind of marine vegetation should be cultured for the environmental benefits: ‘It will help us contribute to reducing impacts of climate change by increasing the carbon storage capacity of our seas.

‘Eelgrass meadows, kelp forests and reef habitats all store carbon in the same way as rainforests, contributing to lowering carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere.’

The wider benefits of the Marine Nature Reserve have also been recognised by Isle of Man Friends of the Earth. Isle of Man Friends of the Earth co-ordinator Phil Corlett said: ‘It’s really heartening to see the Ramsey Marine Reserve set up in the island’s territorial waters as it shows the Isle of Man is taking steps to protect biodiversity and helping at the same time to conserve vital habitats.

‘As a diver myself involved in the Seasearch surveys around the island, I look forward to revisiting the area next year to survey it and document any changes.’

Manx Triumph in Isle of Man Festival of Choirs

Mixed voice choir Musicale became the first local winners of the Isle of Man Festival of Choirs when they claimed the Festival Trophy, and a cheque for £1,500, at the Villa Marina on Sunday. Conductor John Riley received the awards from Festival Patron Moira Anderson and adjudicator Jeffrey Wynn Davies.
It was the second successive year that a mixed voice choir had won the event. In the 2010 inaugural festival, Musicale were narrowly beaten for a place in the final by the Keighley Vocal Union from West Yorkshire who went on to take the overall title.

Cherrywood Four Star Bed & Breakfast in Ramsey Isle of Man proudly brings you news of enjoyable events taking place on the wonderful Isle of Man. Why not browse our site to find out more.

This year, Musicale won their class and were joined in the final by the Macclesfield Male Voice Choir and another local group, Manx Voices, conducted by Angela Stewart, who triumphed in the ladies voice section. The class winners all received trophies and cheques for £500.
Sunday saw the finalists performing 25 minute concert repertoires of their own choice and in his adjudication Mr. Wynn Davies referred to ‘the afternoon of choral enjoyment’ which had been witnessed by the audience.
Festival Director Geoff Corkish told the competing choristers and members of the audience:
‘This is the second Isle of Man Festival of Choirs, as opposed to a Choirs Festival. We very deliberately chose the title because, as a Festival of Choirs what we are doing is meeting, singing, harmonising and celebrating one of the most wonderful gifts in the world – the gift of being able to sing and sing together in friendship and harmony. I thank you for that this weekend.
‘The event has been established as a friendly and important festival for choirs to sing and enjoy music with a competitive edge.’
In her speech, Miss Anderson said that over the weekend many people had shared her pleasure in choral singing and paid tribute to Geoff Corkish who, she said, had been the catalyst for getting the Festival off the ground. He should be applauded for his infectious enthusiasm for conceiving the congregation of lovers of choral singing which had brought everyone closer together.
There was a new trophy this year, together with a cheque for £250, both donated by Douglas Corporation. The trophy was to be awarded to the most entertaining choir of the weekend, the first recipients being the Blackburn Peoples Choir.
Festival results – Male Voice Choirs: 1. Macclesfield Male Voice Choir 85; 2. Lon Dhoo 84; Ladies’ choirs: 1. Manx Voices 89; 2. Equali Ladies Choir, Cheshire 86; Mixed voice choirs: 1. Musicale 88; 2. Blackburn Peoples Choir 87; 3. Glenfaba Chorale 86.
The weekend concluded with something different for the choristers – an Oompah Night in the hands of the Blaskapelle Oompah Band. The Festival now moves to a two-year cycle with the next one scheduled for 18th-20th October 2013. The intention of the organisers, Isle of Man Tourism, had been to establish the event on the music calendar and then switch to a biennial programme.
The 2013 Festival may have an international element to it as Mr.Corkish revealed that a representative from a choir in Germany had visited the Villa Marina to assess the event for possible future involvement. English choirs also sent officials to view the Manx event.
Economic Development Minister Allan Bell said:
‘The success of the first two festivals has proved to us that this is a new event which is capable of a great deal of expansion in the years to come. It is not only the choristers themselves who boost our tourist industry during one of the shoulder months of the season as the individual choirs bring with them many friends, relatives and supporters. Macclesfield, for instance, brought a party of 75 to the Island.’

Art exhibition races into Ramsey

B&B Isle of Man, B & B Isle of Man,, B and B Isle of Man, B&B IOM, B & B IOM,  B and B IOM, B and B Ramsey, B&B Ramsey

Two Ramsey Manxmen celebrated for their skills in two very different disciplines – motorcycle racing and art – took centre stage at Ramsey town hall on Friday August 19 when TT competitor Connor Cummins, currently the fast Manx rider around the TT course, opened Racing Through Time, an exhibition of paintings by artist Michael Starkey.

The exhibition comes after Michael Starkey’s year-long artist’s residency funded by the Isle of Man Arts Council and commemorates the centenary of the TT mountain course in a series of 20 paintings depicting various points on the circuit throughout the decades.

Opening the exhibition Connor Cummins said how the paintings provided very different perspectives of the course from those he saw when competing, while Michael Starkey spoke of the hours of research needed to ensure historical accuracy which, in his painting of a scene of Ramsey’s Parliament Square during the 1957 TT, included showing the town hall clock reading 11.40am, the moment when rider Bob McIntyre was due to arrive on his second lap of the Senior race on the first ever 100mph lap.

Now part of the Isle of Man Arts Council’s contemporary art loan collection, Racing Through Time will remain on display in Ramsey town hall until September 16.

Residents Get Back To Their Roots with Ramsey in Bloom

bed and Breakfast Isle of Man, Bed and Breakfasts Isle of Man, Bed and Breakfast IOM, Bed and Breakfast Bookings, Bed and Breakfast Ramsey

This year’s Ramsey in Bloom yet again revealed outstanding horticultural talent. At the prize giving held in Ramsey town hall on Tuesday August 9 Ramsey Town Commissioners’ chairman Captain Nigel Malpass congratulated entrants on their achievements and spoke of the ‘stunning’ displays in all categories, adding that he was pleased the competition continued to attract new participants every year.
Judging took place in July by the Commission’s head gardener Ken Barnes and well-known local horticulturalist Pat Goodway who said it had been a ‘privilege’ to have visited so many beautiful gardens and witnessed such high standards. Mrs Goodway welcomed the eight newcomers to the competition this year and said that among the new themes to have emerged was a creative planting mix of vegetables and flowers providing a dual-purpose garden. An estate garden beyond the scope of the large garden category earned owners Mr and Mrs John Crellin a special commendation certificate and a comment from Mrs Goodway that the judges would welcome more estate entries in the future.
The prize presentation also provided an opportunity to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of head gardener Ken Barnes who is to retire in November after more than 10 years with the Commission.

International Folk Dance Festival

International Folk Dance Festival 2011 @ Cherrywood.im

The Manx Folk Dance Society will be celebrating 60 years of dancing later this month by staging a special international folk dance festival, with public events across the length and breadth of the Island for everyone to enjoy.

Prominent at many Island events the Manx Folk Dance Society was formed in 1951 for the Festival of Mann celebrations, and although there is no definitive traditional Manx costume the group has adopted a number of distinctive and colourful designs over the years, which members use during performances both on and off the Island. Their continuing popularity has played a major role in preserving Manx dancing as they pass on their knowledge to subsequent generations, but their unabated enthusiasm has now spilled over into the production of books, records, cassettes and videos. They are currently working on a DVD of Manx dances which they hope will be completed by next year.

Generously supported by the Manx Heritage Foundation, the Isle of Man Arts Council and the Elizabeth Clucas Trust, the festival promises to be a colourful exhibition of costume and dance with a multi-cultural line-up of groups from England, Germany, Sweden, Wales and the Isle of Man. Many of the dances date back over centuries, expressing individual traits as diverse as daily chores in Sweden, or the fertility of crops in England, with their costumes replicated through the study of historical drawings and patterns to identify some of the key features of each country.

Members of the Manx Folk Dance Society have represented the Island at many international events over the years, and in turn have hosted visiting groups from which they have made their selection. There will be a cross section of talent treading the boards during this unique festival which has been many years in gestation and will culminate in a gala performance at the Royal Hall in the Villa Marina.

Despite a hectic schedule members of the visiting groups will also have the opportunity to explore the Island and meet up with old friends.

In addition an open invitation has been extended to members of the Manx Folk Dance Society, both past and present, to celebrate the group’s 60th anniversary on the 7th September, 2011, at the Hydro Hotel, Douglas. If you would like further details please contact Freda Black by phoning 624858.

Isle of Man wildlife team spot rare Risso's dolphins

Bed Breakfast Isle of Man, Bed Breakfast IOM, Bed Breakfast Ramsey, B and B IOM, B and B Ramsey

Risso's dolphin @ Cherrywood.im A team of marine experts has recorded a rare sighting of a group of Risso's dolphins off the Isle of Man coast.

The group also spotted seven minke whales and about 30 common dolphins.

The Manx Wildlife Trust (MWT) expedition, including basking shark and whale experts, took place on 27 July.

MWT Marine Officer Eleanor Stone said: "Our waters support a huge variety of marine animals and some of the most charismatic ones put on a great display for our survey teams".

Shark disappointment

The Risso's dolphins were sighted off the island's west coast.

The number of Risso's dolphins spotted near the Isle of Man has been steadily decreasing in recent years.

The number of sightings last year was a third down on 2009, with just 20 compared to 60 in previous years.

Conservationists have been recording the number of sightings to better understand their habits and behaviour.

Ms Stone added: "The only slight disappointment was the lack of basking shark sightings.

"They have been few and far between over the last couple of months because there has been no big build-up of plankton near the surface of the water, which is why we think there are no sharks at the surface either".

Isle of Man Wurlitzer Summer Series

Accommodation Isle of Man, Bed Breakfast Accommodation Isle of Man, Tourist Accommodation Isle of Man, Holiday Accommodation Isle of Man, Accommodation Ramsey

A new series of free concerts featuring the Isle of Man Wurlitzer is taking place throughout August 2011. The concerts will take place on Monday evenings and Wednesday lunchtimes from 1st to 31st August 2011.

The series features organists from around the Isle of Man. Some have performed on the Wurlitzer before while others have not. All are united by enthusiasm for the kaleidoscopic sound of this unique and delightful instrument.

Series co-ordinator Jonathan King said:

“Since the Isle of Man Wurlitzer was inaugurated in the Villa Marina Arcade in December 2009 there have been some wonderful concerts played by visiting cinema organ virtuosi. Such concerts take place on an occasional basis, perhaps once every few weeks or so. As a result many people visit the Isle of Man and return home without having the chance to experience the sound of the Wurlitzer in its beautiful new setting.

“If we are to make the most of our Wurlitzer we must learn to play it ourselves. The good news is that the Isle of Man has a strong and creative musical community of its own. A number of individuals from within that community have already been prepared to take on the ‘Wurlitzer challenge’.

“I am delighted to be able to announce the 2011 Wurlitzer Summer Series in which a greater number of Manx resident musicians than ever before have ‘taken the plunge’ and agreed to play the Wurlitzer in public. I am sure they, and their audiences, will have a marvellous time.

“I am grateful to the performers for giving freely of their time and talents. Thanks to audiences’ generosity, the Christmas series of four concerts raised £770 for good causes. I am hopeful that, with nine concerts, the new summer series will raise even more.”

The full line-up for the Summer Series is as follows:

Monday 1 August 8pm Margaret Cubbon, Douglas
Wednesday 3 August 1pm
Don Roworth, Peel
Monday 8 August 8pm John Riley, Onchan
Wednesday 10 August 1pm
Jimmy Thomson, Port Erin
Monday 15 August 8pm Margaret Cubbon, Douglas
Wednesday 17 August 1pm Jonathan King, Port St Mary
Monday 22 August 8pm John Riley, Onchan
Wednesday 24 August 1pm Mike Porter, Rushen
Monday 29 August 8pm No concert
Wednesday 31 August 1pm Gareth Moore, Santon

Admission is free and there will be a charity collection on each occasion.

The Isle of Man Wurlitzer was installed at Summerland in 1989. Following the closure of that site, the Wurlitzer was repaired and overhauled by internationally renowned expert Len Rawle, and installed as the focal point of the newly restored Villa Marina Arcade. The inaugural concert was given by Len on 17th December 2009.

The Wurlitzer Summer Series is designed to complement the highly successful brass band series, sponsored by the Isle of Man Arts Council, which takes place in the Villa Marina Arcade on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons throughout the summer.

The department is also half way through a £3million track replacement scheme on the five mile long Snaefell Mountain Railway.

‘My Department has also invested £1.5million in track replacement on the Snaefell Mountain Railway demonstrating our commitment to its future,’ Mr Cretney said. ‘I will be seeking approval at the July sitting of Tynwald for additional funding and hope to secure a further £1.5million to complete the track renewal next winter.’

Isle of Man Railway @ Cherrywood.im

Published by the Isle of Man Steam Railway Supporters’ Association this souvenir guide will appeal to both the committed enthusiast and the occasional passenger.

Compact and colourful this slim, but informative volume, packs easily into a knapsack for reference and includes bite-sized paragraphs about the history of the Island’s railway. It briefly charts the steady decline of the Manx railway network during the 1950s and 1960s, but paints a positive picture about the southern line which remains today.

Bursting with colourful photographs of proud engines and black and white images of yesteryear, this aptly named companion helps the traveller to take ‘a trip along the line’ by way of its pages between Douglas and Port Erin. However, there’s nothing like taking the actual journey itself as you steam towards Port Erin, where the book encourages its readers to visit the local railway museum situated next to the station.

And for those who like a little more detail about the engines there’s a comprehensive listing of the locomotive fleet with short biographies nestling within its back pages.

Priced at £5 ‘The Travellers’ Companion’ is the perfect memento of your trip on the Island’s historical railway. The book is available from the Isle of Man Steam Railway Supporters’ Association, the Railway Museum at Port Erin, or from manned stations on both the Steam Railway and the Manx Electric Railway routes.
